"I gave up all that inferior stuff so I could know Christ personally, experience his resurrection power, be a partner in his suffering, and go all the way with him to death itself." ~Philippians 3:10

Well, I have slowed down enough this morning to share the epiphany (I think that's what I had) that came over me last night. We brought a group of about 20 to El Picacho (the Jesus Statue) for a time of devotional and as my usual, I was thinking how the darkness (it was nighttime) hides the poverty that is so prevalent here in Honduras. At night Tegucigalpa looks just like any other beautiful city when viewed from 3000 feet up a mountain. And yet the poverty is still there. The darkness hides it. I am constantly reminded of a couple things when I am at the Statue.
  1. Darkness always hides that which is not good. I am reminded of the scriptures that talk about darkness and light. I am also reminded of the scripture that tells us that the poor will always be among us. As followers of Christ, we should not live our lives as if that is not true. To do so is to remain in the darkness!! To live our lives and ignore the poverty and oppression that exists in the world is to live ignorantly and in darkness. We as followers of Jesus are called to live in the light. We are called to be aware of the plight of the poor and the orphans and the widows. Let's not live in darkness and ignorance. Let's be a part of exposing the injustice we find around us and bring these things into the light. To do otherwise in to remain in the dark.
  2. I am also painfully aware of how we like to keep our personal lives in the darkness. We all have stuff that we do not allow to be exposed to the "light" and we want it to stay hidden. We don't want it brought into the light where others can see it. Then we would actually have to deal with it and be held accountable to it. I have also become aware of how wonderful it is when that which has been hidden gets exposed. Painful and embarrasing and difficult, yes, exposing our darkness can definitely be that. At the same time, there is an incredible sense of relief and peace that comes when we get it out there and invite others in to help us deal with it. I have a feeling that this is what community is all about. Helping one another move from the darkness to the light.
Well, that's it for now..... see ya soon.

P.S........ If you have not been watching the World Cup whenever you get a chance, then you are missing the greatest sporting event in the world. I have not seen much, but have loved what I have seen. I am somehow finding myself rooting for England and Argentina now that the Americans have made their exit.

See ya.
