I want to encourage you to go read Greg's blog and the "Christian Affirmation 2005" he is referring to. I am honestly wondering why there is this constant need to clarify our identity at all. For me it is an inherent flaw in doing church. The institution becomes what we desire to preserve and somehow identify, not the discipleship under Jesus. Whatever happened to what Jesus tells us in John 13:31-35? Right after Judas has left and as a prelude to Peter's denial Jesus tells them what the identifier is:
When he had left, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is seen for who he is, and God seen for who he is in him. The moment God is seen in him, God's glory will be on display. In glorifying him, he himself is glorified--glory all around! Children, I am with you for only a short time longer. You are going to look high and low for me. But just as I told the Jews, I'm telling you: Where I go, you are not able to come. Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples--when they see the love you have for each other."What do you want to be identified with? Jesus or an institution?

Yup, I choose Jesus! I think the problem has been that when we put all of our focus on these issues of belief we loose sight of the walk we have with the Christ and instead of ministering in a broken and hurting world we waste our time trying to prove we are right. Unfortunetly we find security in our rightness instead of in the grace of our Lord.
