How does a great day suddenly go sour? spraining an ankle! today we had the pleasure of unloading a container of soup. yep, a whole container of soup. 128 barrels, each barrel weighing in at a little over 300 lbs. That's a lot of soup! After we were finished I was moving a pallet for a guy and my left foot went in a hole and wham!..... it rolled right over. I have had a weak left ankle for years. old basketball injury. i made it through the rest of the day and it was a little sore, but i didn't think it was too bad. on the way home I ran into a ton of traffic. my truck is a manual shift so i was using my left foot and the clutch like crazy. i mean bumper to bumper for close to an hour. when i got out of the truck i could barely put any weight on it. i'm icing it and hoping it is not worse than i originally thought.
There were multiple protests and marches again today. the police are now being more active in making sure they don't block streets which means they are more confrontational. yesterday there were reports of 10 injured and more than 80 arrested. one of those arrested was a well known teacher and another, with a broken arm, was one of the presidential candidates from an independent political party. it is interesting that the pro-zelaya crowd are talking alot about being oppressed and human rights are being violated by the police and military, but they demonstrate in ways that cause the police to have to act. blocking roads, harassing other citizens passing by, throwing rocks, bottles, and sticks at the police would seem to be a sure fire way to have a problem. i am all far peaceful demonstration, but what this group is doing is not always peaceful.
Another thing that the pro-zelaya crowd is claiming is that the "de-facto" regime is squashing the media and controlling it. I just watched a pro-zelaya rally on tv for the past 20 or so minutes. that would not be a a lack of freedom of the press or a squashing of anything pro-zelaya. whatever you read, please be assured that violations of human rights and civil liberties is not true on any large scale. does that mean that every cop and soldier doing it right? maybe not, but there is no wide spread dictator-type oppression happening.
there are some pretty crazy rumors out there that for now i am writing off as rumors. one is that zelaya is training and preparing the few thousand honduran "war-refugees" in nicaragua to be some sort of civilian militia. the rumor i read in the paper today (attributed to the political party in nicaragua that is in opposition to ortega and trying to cause him problems) claimed that chavez is supplying them with weapons. i don't think so, but i guess you can never really know for sure. i'm really not convinced that chavez is going to risk the condemnation of the world to help this guy.
ok... that's it for now.
